Prepaid Credit Card for Teenagers

If you are considering offering a credit card to your teenager or child, you’ll of course be worried about overspending and how you’ll be able to control the expenses.

Believe it or not, if you are looking for a method to teach your teenagers about money, finances and administration, prepaid credit cards for teenagers may be a great option. In this article we’ll talk a bit about the options, benefits and possible setbacks.

Prepaid credit cards are very much like handing free money to children, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way, considering the credit card has a limit will let your teenager spend freely only until the funds are gone.

  • Your teenagers won’t need to carry cash along; they’ll have their cash stored on the card for any time that they go out. You can monitor your teenager’s spending either online or by calling the issuing credit card company. Reloads can be done online or by phone.
  • Prepaid credit cards for teens work well for traveling, because they can use the card as long as the issuing company provides service in whatever country they are in. There are cards available for travel through MasterCard, Visa and American Express. They are also safer than cash as guarantees (depending on issuer) refund unauthorized purchases.
  • No worrying about monthly credit card payments or bills.
  • Funds can easily be added or reloaded to the prepaid credit card, by you or relatives.
  • If you are worried, do not place large amounts on the prepaid credit card, upload smaller amounts.
  • Wide acceptance.

There are downsides associated with prepaid debit cards, as with normal credit cards the charges that are levied on your prepaid debit card can become quite high. These include fees when using prepaid debit cards, just as there are fees with normal credit cards.

There are many credit card companies that are offering credit cards specifically designed for teenagers, MasterCard has one called Allowcard, Visa has one called Buxx. Both MC and Visa offer online courses that teach important money management skills, educating and creating a pattern of responsibility they can use throughout life.

You’ll need to establish clear rules before offering the cards to your children, establish a firm and reasonable budget so they learn to administer their funds and avoid senseless purchasing. If they don’t have a job of their own, you should ask them to work in some fashion to earn the money they’ll receive, either round the house or in the family business. If your child’s purchases aren’t sensible, take the time to talk it over with your teens, you can give an incentive if they save some money and haven’t spent it all by the end of the allowance period. Say, if you end the month with X amount of funds on the debit card, I’ll add an X amount in the next period.

As you can see prepaid credit cards for teenagers are a valid and interesting option for parents and teaching financial responsibility to your young ones, limits and real-time monitoring makes you relax and the security a card offers makes it a great option for your teens.
